Chapter 15

Talia

“If they bounce back when you push them, then they’re ripe?” I ask to confirm, glancing up at the fae woman whose garden I’ve volunteered to tend.

She nods with a slanted little smile as if she finds it amusing to watch a human fumbling with fae crops, but there’s nothing cruel in her expression. I just have to keep at my campaign to contribute to the pack every way I can until I graduate from amusement to real appreciation.

I only manage to identify a couple of ripe gourds before August comes ambling into the village. His pace and his stance are casual enough, but there’s something serious in his golden eyes that makes me sit up straighter before he’s even spoken.

“Always so eager to put yourself to work,” he says, his smile all warm fondness, and then motions me up. “I’m sorry to interrupt. Come back to the castle with me?”

Whatever this is about, he doesn’t want to explain the details in front of our pack-kin. I stand up, brushing the stray bits of dirt from my hands, and dip my head to the fae woman. “I’ll pitch in some more when I can.”

“No need to trouble yourself,” she says. “But there are always new ones coming ready if you happen to stop by.”

August keeps up his relaxed pace as we walk back to the castle. I’d assume that’s because he doesn’t want to hurry me on my wounded foot if he wasn’t so quiet as well. After we’ve stepped into the entrance hall, he turns me to him and cups my face. He kisses me for long enough that my knees start to wobble with the rush of heat.

I reach for him, my fingers curling around the back of his neck, as if I could pull him even closer, but he pulls back with a hint of a growl as if releasing me takes some effort. His expression has gone even more serious than before.

“Sylas wants to speak with you,” he says. “He’s in his study.”

Is that all? Although with our treacherous guests roaming around still, maybe it makes sense that the fae lord wouldn’t want them knowing he had something urgent to discuss with me, whether they realize what it was or not. I definitely have no idea.

Have the things Nuldar said changed Sylas’s opinion about how to handle my presence here? About how involved I should be with his pack? No one’s treated me any differently since we returned, but I know how close the fae prefer to hold their cards.

I find the door to Sylas’s study open. He’s sitting in his usual spot behind his desk, but he gets up at my entrance. He closes the door behind me with a quick word of magic that must be to ensure our privacy and motions me to the armchairs by the room’s small hearth.

The fire crackling there is more for superficial appeal than necessary heat. The summer warmth spills through the open window along with a mix of clover sweetness and piney tang.
